Sweet & Spicy BBQ Sauce

My dad is such a great cook and I mean GRRRRREAT cook! I think that must be where my love of good food came from. I almost felt like I was a food network set when I walked into his kitchen the last time I visited him. What’s better than good BBQ sauce? Homemade BBQ sauce! My dad made some pulled pork a few weeks ago and ever since he told me about it it’s been stuck in my head. LITTERALLY! So today was the day I finally made this delicious southern classic. Man and it is sooooooo delicious! First I made the sauce. It’s thick and rich, sweet and spicy and has a tang to it all at once. It’s a really well balanced homemade bbq sauce and I’m sure you will feel the same way when you try it :)

Homemade sweet & spicy bbq sauce:

  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 8 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of honey ( I use orange blossom honey)
  • 1/2 tablespoon fresh ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon ground mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon of chili powder (more or less depending how spicy you want your sauce)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp of hot pepper sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

In a  saucepan, combine all ingredients. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat to simmer to med low. Cook uncovered, stirring frequently, for 1 hour 30minutes or until the sauce is very thick. Will keep for 2 weeks in an airtight container stored in the refrigerator.
